This week we launched an exciting opportunity to join our award-winning careers program as a Design Engineer Placement Student. We asked our current placement student, Luke to share his experiences over the last couple of months.

Luke joined our team in the Summer of 2022 from Nottingham Trent University where he has been studying towards his product design degree. Ever since joining, Luke has seized every opportunity to learn and develop his skills. Having been in the job for over six months, he is well placed to share his experiences about his time with us.

Luke said:

“I began my placement and joined the Stormsaver team in June 2022 with very little knowledge of the rainwater harvesting industry. Soon after starting, I was bought up to speed with the different systems which were on offer, especially the technical aspects of the systems. My dedicated mentor had a clear training plan which helped me to develop my knowledge.

As well as desk-based tasks, I was also given opportunities to get hands-on within the production area. I also had opportunities to visit our customer sites across the UK to see how the maintenance side of things work. My time in the workshop area was particularly interesting and consisted of wiring, plumbing, using power tools and constructing bespoke cabinet systems to be sent out to customers across the UK. Hands on training allowed me to grow as a designer as I had a good understanding of the system operation and functionality.

Since starting my placement at Stormsaver, my skills within the design field have grown massively. CAD, technical drawings, rendering and design for manufacture are critical tasks I carry out within my day-to-day role, all of which are taught thoroughly at Nottingham Trent University. This has meant I’ve been able to transfer my university skills into the workplace, and further build upon them during my time here. Working with large multi-component assemblies was a challenge at first, however through training provided I was able to navigate the parts library efficiently and create systems to industry standard.

From the moment I stepped in, everybody has made me feel welcomed and valued at Stormsaver. The friendly atmosphere and buzz in the office makes everyday a fun working environment to be a part of. Lola the office dog is a bonus too besides having to move the bin every 10 minutes as she will eat anything (including drawing pins and biro pens). Greg, my mentor, and former Product Design Student has been a great help for developing my skills and pushing my designs to the limit. Having great chemistry within a design team is crucial for communicating ideas as well as being efficient with workload, and I’m glad to have found that here.”

Product Design Placement

As a placement student within the design team at Stormsaver, I get to learn about all things rainwater harvesting and water reuse! I am able to apply my class-based knowledge from Nottingham Trent University in a real-life work place. I love learning about all the different types of systems, as well as thinking of new ways to reuse water. My favorite water saving tip is to time your shower.
