Zoo Elephant House, Blackpool

Built at a cost of £5 million, this new elephant facility was designed to house six Asian elephants including facilities for animal welfare, breeding, research and tourists. The project was designed with a number of highly sustainable features including, rainwater harvesting LED lighting and a natural habitat design.

Stormsaver were able to provide a rainwater reuse solution for capturing rainwater from the roof area to provide a non-potable water supply for washing the elephants, topping up the elephant’s 225m2 pool and cooling the elephant enclosure’s surfaces via high-pressure sprinklers.

The solution came in the form of our non-pressurised rainwater harvesting system. This consists of a main storage tank which is supported by a header tank. This was ideal for the site due to the large volumes of water required in a short period time. Due to the nature of the project, we also included a large UV disinfection system to ensure bacteria is successfully removed for the elephants. This was sized specifically to meet the large flow requirements of the site.
