Welcome Centre, Greater Manchester

Built at a cost of £33 million, this new welcome centre was designed to be the hub for an iconic public garden display. The site incorporated a ticketing centre, a café, retail facilities and an education hub in one highly sustainable design.

The site incorporated many sustainability features including, rainwater harvesting, permeable paving a wildflower green roof, ground source heat pumps and sustainable building materials. Collectively, these helped the building to achieve BREEAM Excellent and achieve a number of high-profile accolades including the RIBA Northwest Sustainability Award 2022.

Stormsaver were able to provide a sustainable solution to successfully capture rainwater from the roof area for irrigation and toilet flushing within the visitor centre. The solution for this came in the form of our popular combi arrangement which was ideal for the site’s non-potable water demand.

Ultraviolet Disinfection was also supplied with the rainwater harvesting system to protect younger visitors from exposure to bacteria in the rainwater supply. To prevent shadowing affects within the UV system, an additional stage of filtration was included to remove fine particles.
