Transport Interchange, Bolton

Built at a total construction cost of £48 million, the new Bolton Transport Interchange was designed to unify bus and rail journeys within one contemporary and fully accessible building. The facility accommodates 20 bus stands and supports more than three million rail passenger journeys each year.

The design team set an ambition to achieve a BREEAM “Very Good” classification. This was realised through the integration of multiple sustainability features, including a natural-light roof, rainwater harvesting, air-source heat pumps, and energy-efficient LED lighting.

Our estimators specified a rainwater harvesting system to capture water from the roof for use in toilet flushing. One of the key challenges faced by our design engineers was the limited plant room footprint available on site.

To overcome this, Stormsaver provided a tailored solution that fitted seamlessly within the designated plant area. The Combi rainwater harvesting system was selected, offering an efficient and compact design that also incorporated robust back-up systems. This ensured uninterrupted service for an operationally critical building.
