Train Maintenance Depot, Gloucester

Built as part of the Department for Transport’s Intercity Express Programme, this train maintenance depot was designed to provide stabling, washing and maintenance facilities for up to 17 ten-car trains. The design also had to be highly sustainable with rainwater harvesting, LED lighting, solar PV and sustainable drainage being incorporated into the design.

As well stabling and maintenance facilities, the facility was also designed to house a two-floor office accommodation block to provide welfare facilities to 170 team members. The developer of the site also had a corporate ambition to reduce their water usage and achieve BREEAM Outstanding certification on the new building.

The design incorporated a water-saving solution to harvest and re-use rainwater from the vast roof area for toilet flushing within the staff welfare facility. Our estimators determined that our compact combi system was ideal for the site due to limited availability of plant space and a time-constrained construction window.

The rainwater system also incorporated a UV disinfection system to remove bacteria from the rainwater supply. Stormsaver have continued to provide service and maintenance facilities to the site for the past ten years. In this time, the site has experienced high levels of reliability and minimal component failures.
