As part of an ambitious master plan to create a net zero student community in York, the developer behind this accommodation needed a sustainable solution to tackle one of the biggest challenges in high density living, water consumption. With 220 studio apartments on site, demand for water was set to be significant. In student properties where bills are included, usage is typically higher, driving up operating costs. Reducing environmental impact and controlling these costs were key priorities.
With a proven track record in sustainable residential development, the developer naturally turned to rainwater harvesting as a reliable, low carbon alternative to mains water.

The Solution
Stormsaver was chosen to design and deliver a system that met the demands of this large-scale development without compromising on reliability. The Non-Pressurised Rainwater Harvesting System proved the perfect fit, collecting and recycling rainwater from the building’s roof area for reuse in toilet flushing across all student flats. Crucially, the system was designed to mininise the risk of a supply failure in the event of a fault, ensuring complete peace of mind.
The results spoke for themselves. Since installation, the development has saved over 6 million litres of water, reducing the running costs of this bills-included property while supporting net zero living. The UK manufactured system proved exceptionally robust, requiring minimal maintenance over years of operation. Stormsaver’s expert team also provided ongoing planned servicing, ensuring reliable performance and maximising water savings year after year.
