Project Overview
This Welsh Primary School building had a rainwater harvesting system installed as part of a council-wide school refurbishment programme undertaken in 2018. This project aimed to overhaul the facilities at the school, including the re-decoration of classrooms, external repairs and improved drainage works at the 209-pupil school.
The drainage works in 2018 saw the addition of a rainwater harvesting tank which was designed to collect rainwater from the roof and recycle it for a sustainable water supply for toilet flushing. This approach was designed to not only reduce surface water runoff but to improve water efficiency too.

Our Solution
Having not initially supplied the rainwater harvesting system, the school called upon our maintenance provision to improve the reliability of the system installed in 2018. Our engineer quickly diagnosed that the system was a ‘do-it-yourself’ system with an underground tank which was suffering from several defects.
Our expert engineers explained that a full replacement would be the best option to improve reliability and water savings through retrofitting a new system. The retrofit system came in the form of one of our easy-to-install StormStation units which could hold 5,000 litres of recycled rainwater.
In addition to the 5,000-litre capacity within the StormStation, our design team were also able to provide a bespoke control programme to also utilise the existing 10,000 litre tank. These two capacities were able to be used in unison to maximise water savings.
