Coffee Production Facility, Essex

Built at a cost of £38 million, this new coffee production facility was designed to roast 45,000 tonnes of coffee annually. The project was designed to quadruple our client’s coffee production capacity in the UK.

Being sustainably focused, our client had an ambition to achieve BREEAM Outstanding status, the highest category of rating available for sustainable buildings. This was achieved by incorporating rainwater reuse, solar panels for electricity generation and thermal heating and electric vehicle charging.

A key challenge for the site was space constraints. Despite being a large building, plant space was limited. This meant the rainwater harvesting system had to be compact in order to meet with the space requirements.

Our estimators determined that our Combi rainwater harvesting system would be the best solution for supplying recycled rainwater for toilet flushing. The Combi unit was also accompanied by a 30,000 litre below ground storage tank. Since installation, the site has been reliant on 99% rainwater to meet their non-potable demand.
