Bus Station, North Nottinghamshire

Built at a cost of £11.6 million, Mansfield Bus Station was designed and specified by the local authority’s in-house team of architects. The facility included a café, retail store, travel information centre, and a spacious customer concourse, aiming to provide a modern and functional transport hub while supporting sustainability objectives.

The local authority had previously realised the benefits of rainwater harvesting on other projects and wanted to continue saving water on this development. Sustainability features included reduced mains water consumption through rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient design, and consideration for operational efficiency in high-traffic areas.

Stormsaver specified and installed a non-pressurised rainwater harvesting system to supply 12 customer toilets with recycled water. Due to site constraints, an above-ground storage tank was used to avoid disruption in the bus arrivals area during maintenance, rather than a below-ground solution.

The system captured rainwater from the 700 m² roof area, delivering a potential water saving of 400,000 litres annually. Stormsaver also provided ongoing maintenance services, including an initial system assessment and two planned maintenance visits per year, ensuring the system continued to operate efficiently. This project reinforced the local authority’s commitment to sustainable water management across its estate.
