Alexander Stadium, Birmingham
Project Overview
Built at a cost of £72 million, the re-development of the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham was an iconic project design for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The facility was designed to incorporate world-class athletics facilities, spectator facilities and commercial retail spaces.
The stadium was designed to handle 40,000 spectators during the commonwealth games and as part of legacy planning, was planned to host 18,000 for normal events. The designers of the stadium had an ambition to incorporate solar PV, public realm spaces and rainwater harvesting to lower the stadium’s impact on the community.

The Solution
The challenge for this site was the required number of fail-safes required for event days and meeting the peak water demands of the site. Naturally, they turned to rainwater harvesting to help with toilet flushing and irrigation of green spaces.
Our Design Team created a completely bespoke design for the site which saw the combination of two of our highly advanced Triplex automatic backwash filtration units. Together the two systems worked in unison to deliver a supply of filtered rainwater at six litres per second. The system also consisted of a 110,000 litre tank and associated break tank for failure protection.
