The Water Efficiency Cambridgeshire Fund
Cambridgeshire is one of the many regions in the UK that is considered as seriously water stressed, which is causing a major bottleneck in terms of growth, despite the county’s economic potential.
In a bid to try and unlock that potential for growth, the government has funded an initiative that will look to mitigate water scarcity in the area and allow Cambridgeshire to thrive through new commercial and household development.
What is it?
The Water Efficiency Cambridgeshire Fund (WeCB) and is a £1.6m fund, set up by the government, which aims to promote enhanced water savings in commercial buildings within the Cambridge Water Resource Zone. This objective sets to be achieved by offering grants, anywhere from £500 to £100,000, for projects that are specifically looking to reduce potable water demand.
Any Non-Household water customer with a project that will increase water efficiency in their building is eligible to apply for funding, and eligible projects range from water audits to water saving technology upgrades- such as full-scale Rainwater Harvesting systems.
There have been similar, water efficiency funding, incentives to reduce water demand within developments in the past, such as the Ofwat Water Efficiency Fund, but the WeCB fund is the first of its kind in the way that it does not require the applicant to put forward any investment of their own.
This is set to be a brilliant opportunity for businesses in the region to fulfil their water saving potential and really make a difference in reducing UK’s 5 billion-litre water deficit, all whilst, potentially, being a catalyst for similar intiatives going forward.
Applications for the fund are now open and close on the 1st of May 2026 at 17:00.
