Primary School, Torfaen

During the planning and development of this new primary school located in Torfaen, Wales, a large emphasis was placed on the presence of sustainable technologies that aimed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification. Upon completion, the project achieved this certification, in large part due to the presence of Rainwater Harvesting and Smart Sustainable Drainage systems (SuDS).

The development of the new primary school had no possibility of infiltration for additional stormwater runoff and therefore, under Schedule 3 of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, the project needed to include a rainwater harvesting system to the main building and a defined overflow area to discharge additional runoff at a flow rate no larger than 2l/s/ha.

Stormsaver was called upon to provide the solution by way of our very own Smart SuDS System, consisting of our Combi 620 unit with an additional 200l pressure vessel, a 25,000l smart storage tank, 3-stage-filtration through cotton wound filters & UV disinfection in addition to a monitoring system to show live water savings.

This allows stormwater attenuation storage to be used for rainwater harvesting to meet the site’s non-potable demand.

The required storage capacity needed to attenuate incoming storms is automatically calculated by way of a control panel, that communicates with Met Office weather forecasts up to 72 hours in advance, as well as a release valve that can drain the storage capacity to a safe level.
