University Teaching Hub, Bournemouth

Built at a cost of £30.5 million, this landmark university gateway building accommodates the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences with teaching facilities, offices, and a 260-seat lecture theatre. Its striking architecture was designed to create impact on a key route into the city.

Alongside its distinctive design, the building incorporates a range of sustainability measures including rainwater harvesting, solar panels, recycled cladding, and low-energy heating systems. Together, these enabled the project to achieve BREEAM “Excellent” status.

Our estimators developed a system to harvest and reuse roof rainwater for toilet flushing. Two key challenges were its coastal location, attracting high bird activity, and the roof garden surface, which increased debris entering the tank.

Stormsaver provided a Combi rainwater harvesting system with an integrated automatic backwash filter to manage the debris load. Our technical team also specified UV disinfection to eliminate bacteria from the rainwater supply. Stormsaver have now provided aftercare for the system for three years and the system has received minimal parts replacements in that time.
