Financial incentives for installing rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling

Concerned installing rainwater harvesting or greywater recycling will increase your costs?

As well as benefitting from reduced water bills, you can now benefit from an additional financial incentive if your development is within the Thames Water supply region.

If you are considering water recycling technologies for your new development, then there has never been a better time to invest in rainwater harvesting or greywater recycling. Between 1st April 2022 and 31st March 2023 Thames Water are offering financial incentives for new connections who have water recycling installed.

Described as a ‘seriously water stressed’ region by DEFRA, it is important that all new developments within the region have plans to reduce mains water consumption. The Water Efficiency scheme aims to encourage developers to install safe, reliable, and cost-effective water recycling technologies.

Does your residential or commercial development qualify?

If your new building requires connection to the Thames Water network, then there are three stages of environmental discounts.

Tier 1 – Water Efficiency

Your development should be designed to adhere to the standard of 110 Litres per person per day. All water fittings should adhere to set guidelines on consumption (These can be found in 13.3.2).

Discount - £200 per property

Tier 2 – Rainwater Harvesting or Greywater Recycling

New developments which have rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling or other water reuse technologies installed can benefit from an additional discount. To be eligible, the systems must be capturing at least 50 litres of water use per property per day. All Tier 1 criteria must be met.

Discount – £1,000 per property

Tier 3 – Water Neutrality

Unsure what water neutrality means for you? Read our handy guide to all things water neutrality here! In essence, water neutral developments should not add any additional water demand than original use of the site. To achieve this standard, Tier 1 and 2 should be adhered to.

Any additional mains water demand should be offset by delivering water efficiency out lined in 13.5.5.
