blue roof system rainwater harvesting

What is a Blue Roof System?

Blue Roof and Blue/Green Roof Systems replaces traditional below ground attenuation storage with above ground storage on the roof area of the building. Instead of storm water runoff draining straight from the roof area in the event of a storm, Blue Roof Systems capture and store runoff within crates on the roof area.

A flow controller is designed to gradually release storm water run off from the roof storage into the drainage network to prevent local drainage infrastructure becoming overwhelmed. A series of emergency overflows are situated within the Blue Roof System in the event of the flow controller becoming blocked.

Rainwater Harvesting and Blue Roof Systems go hand in hand in protecting the urban environment against flooding and reducing the risk of combined sewer overflows during extreme weather.

Storage capacity within the Blue Roof System is utilised by the Rainwater Harvesting System and replaces a separate rainwater storage tank. The Rainwater Harvesting System is connected to the blue roof flow controller which feeds the rainwater harvesting control panel. Reused rainwater can then be gravity fed throughout the building, providing a clean, safe and sustainable water supply for use in toilet flushing, urinals, vehicle wash plants, and irrigation systems.

Using Active Attenuation Technology in collaboration with StormHarvester, the Rainwater Harvesting System ensures 100% of attenuation capacity is always available in the Blue Roof for an incoming storm through weather predication technology.

Why combine?

Reduced Energy – Typically, a Rainwater Harvesting System utilises below ground storage which involves water being boosted around the building via a booster set. By combining technologies, water can be completely gravity fed around the building.

Reduced Potable Water consumption – Water is a precious resource which needs to be protected. Reducing unnecessary use of potable water will help to protect supplies for drinking and sanitation.

Reduced Carbon – Rainwater Harvesting is proven to produce much less carbon emissions than traditional mains water supplies.

Integrated Water Management – Combining the technologies reduces flood risk and protects potable water supplies.
